What Is 20/10 Vision?

Getting a 20/20 prescription from your eye doctor is often considered ideal. Used as a baseline when testing your eyes with an eye chart, your optician determines your visual acuity.

People who correctly read the eye test chart with ease may have 20/20 vision, or in some cases, 20/10 vision.

What Is 20/10 Vision?

If your eye doctor tells you that you have 20/10 vision, don't get taken aback! This prescription means you have better than average eyesight when tested at a distance of 20 feet from your eyes. You see objects clearly ten feet before people with 20/20 vision do.

However, it's essential to keep in mind that most people's vision changes as we age, so a 20/20 or a 20/10 today doesn't necessarily mean next year you'll get the same prescription.

Why Get Regular Eye Exams?

The only way to determine your visual acuity and track changes are by getting a comprehensive eye exam every couple of years or as recommended by your optometrist.

Your optometrist will assess your eyesight using a variety of testing lenses by having you read lines of letters and numbers on an eye chart.

Additionally, he or she will test your pupils by shining a light in your eyes and check your eye movement by instructing you to follow an object he or she moves in front of your eyes. During this test, they'll analyze your peripheral vision and how your eyes work in unison.

Other standard tests during a routine eye exam include a "puff" test to read eye pressure, a slit lamp, and a pupillary examination.

How Common Is 20/10 Vision?

According to experts, less than 1% of the population has 20/10 vision. However, with the use of technology, this percentage could increase over time.

To achieve a 20/10 vision, already having solid eyesight is helpful. Brain training exercises, some types of contact lenses, and LASIK surgery can improve visual acuity, enhance perception, and peripheral vision.

For people who are pursuing careers in athletics, sports, aviation, active duty military, or driving professionally, having a high level of visual acuity helps with performance and safety. Being able to see what's coming ten feet sooner than others gives you a competitive edge on the playing field, the road, the airways, or anywhere else you need to apply your abilities.
